HISTORY

APU SALKANTAY & THE NORTH VALLEY OF CUSCO

Part of the new trends in tourism is visiting scenic areas, enjoying outdoor activities and taking short hikes combined with culture and history. That is why we have included this area, rich in attractions but little known, which we have named the North Valley of Cusco.

Condor Viewpoint

We present the impressive Chonta Natural Viewpoint, or Condor Viewpoint!
Specially designed for Peruvian travelers!
This is a new route for lovers of nature, hiking and birds. On this new tourist circuit in Cusco you can enjoy the flight of the condor in complete tranquility, with the spectacular scenery of the Apurímac canyon. A great adventure, especially for birdwatchers.
The Andean sky is the stage for admiring the spectacular flight of the Peruvian condor. This mythical bird is considered a spiritual messenger; it is one of the largest birds in the world and is endemic to the Andean region of South America. It holds great importance in the worldview and culture of Andean and Indigenous peoples and communities. It is endangered, and its protection and repopulation in the Andes are important.
The Condor Viewpoint, at more than 3,400 m a.s.l., is in the community of Chonta, in the Limatambo district of the Cusco province of Anta, a tourist destination 80 km from the city of Cusco.
You will also enjoy natural landscapes and unique snow-capped mountains such as Humantay and Salkantay. You can also visit the fertile fields of Limatambo and taste exotic fruits typical of Peru, such as lúcuma, cherimoya or the best avocado in the region.
On the way you will visit:
The Tarawasi Archaeological Complex, used as a ceremonial center and resting place during Inca times. Here you will find huge stone buildings and typical agricultural terraces with their fountains and irrigation channels. A great place to admire the quality of Inca architecture and hydraulic engineering!
The temple of Killarumiyoq: the Andean world also worshipped the Moon, or Mama Killa, whom they considered the wife of Inti and the representation of the feminine side of the sky. This civilization built various places in honor of the moon, among them the Temple of Killarumiyoq, in the district of Ancahuasi. The moon was considered responsible for crops and everything that grows from the earth, and Killarumiyoq was also a large Inca agricultural complex.
Here you will find terraces, water channels, farming areas, an ushnu or pyramid, and even a cave with petroglyphs. But the most striking element of Killarumiyoq is a large rock in the center, in which the Incas carved a half moon that also served as a throne for the Inca. This archaeological complex is simply fascinating!

Humantay Lake

Toptur Perú has added this one-day destination, one of the most impressive experiences for lovers of nature and soft adventure, with pristine settings and beautiful landscapes, exotic flora and fauna, lovely valleys and white mountains.
Humantay (or Umantay) Lake, “Head of the Gods”, lies at the foot of one of Cusco’s sacred snow peaks, above 4,250 m a.s.l. Together with Machu Picchu and the Rainbow Mountain, it is one of travelers’ favorite and most photographed sites.
Humantay Lake sits in a glacial cirque; its color is emerald green, shading into turquoise. This hike is a true spectacle of nature, with the scenery of the Vilcabamba mountain range, the snow-capped peaks and the depths of the Apurímac River. But this magical and wonderful natural landscape is not only a place where color and the magic of nature blend together: it is also a sacred and mystical place where you can reflect on the fragility of the Earth’s ecosystem and the effects of climate change.
