ALTERNATIVE INKA TRAIL TO MACHUPICCHU
04 Days - 03 Nights
SUMMARY
One of the most fascinating routes of Perú comparable only to Coroico (Bolivia), this trip offers an adventure filled with adrenaline and emotion from the Abra de Málaga (14,270 ft) to the cloud-covered forests in the province of the Convención - Cusco, located at (3,700 ft) meters of altitude. An experience that combines adventure sports, sightseeing, nature, contact with the local peoples, thermal baths, archaeology, culture and history culminating in the marvellous citadel of Machupicchu.
ITINERARY

Day 01: OLLANTAYTAMBO - ABRA MALAGA - SANTA MARIA Downhill: 80 km
For this trip we leave Cusco in our own private van entering to the Sacred Valley of the Inkas and connecting nicest small villages of Chincheros, Urubamba and Ollantaytambo. We continue travelling up to the highest pass named abra Málaga (14,270 ft), at this point we’ll have a safety orientation regarding all the gear of our bikes, the protective equipment, and description of the route. We will begin our mixed tour (downhill biking + trekking) going from the Andes to the Amazon rain forest on a serpentine road. This day will be an amazing ride through the Andean geography and different ecologic niches, stopping at Carrizales village where lunch awaits us. We’ll ride our bikes from five to six hours, about 87 km and 6,500 feet of vertical-descent downhill. Late in the afternoon arrival to Santa Maria (6,560 ft), a quiet and nice place to have family accommodation and to stay the first night. (L/T/D)

Day 02: SANTA MARIA - SANTA TERESA
Distance: 18 Km
We’ll enjoy an excellent breakfast with the finest coffee of town. After this begins six-hour hike, which gets progressively steeper connecting to Santa Rosa, where you can admiring the Coca plantations and the wonder views of high jungle. After we will continue hiking until we reach the real Inka jungle trail, which once extended the whole length of the Andes and united all of Tawantinsuyo. The descent continues for just over two hours until you reach small town named Q’ellomayo. Lunch at this charming place surrounded by pure nature. Make sure you have saved enough energy for the final stretch along the Vilcanota River we’ll reach the delicious natural hot springs Cocalmayo. After we enjoy the thermal baths water we continue hiking for one more hour to arrive to Santa Teresa (6,200 ft). Basic accommodations with a local family lodging us and providing our dinner. (B/L)

Day 03: SANTA TERESA – HIDROELECTRICA - AGUAS CALIENTES Distance: 16 Km
After breakfast start our trekking through trails filled with vegetation. Later we will search the suspension bridges as well as cross the Vilcanota River through Oroya (Oroya means an iron cable to cross the river). This is the most fun and adventurous part of this amazing tour. Along the way we will enjoy wide variety of butterflies, parrots, birds and insects and the famous bird known as Cock of the Rocks (Rupicula Peruviana).. Then we will continue walking around two hours and finally arrive to Aguas Calientes (6,560 ft), the base town for Machupicchu. Lunch. There is an optional visit to the hot springs. Dinner and stay in nice comfortable hotel. (B/L)

Day 04: MACHUPICCHU - CUSCO
After an early breakfast, we'll take a bus up the winding road to Machupicchu to witness the extraordinary dawn from Intipunku (Sun Gate). Our hour-long scheduled visit allows you a calm, quiet visit and lets you enjoy the natural beauty and the magical environment of this masterpiece of the Andean man: MACHUPICCHU (7,900 ft). This exceptional site is a remarkable remnant of the Inca Empire at the height of its glory, and the extraordinary harmony between its natural and cultural elements make it a “must-see” place in a lifetime. You'll have the benefit of on-site lectures with an expert guide. After the scheduled hour, you can explore and relax by yourself, including the option of climbing up Waynapicchu Mountain (8,700 ft) for the spectacular view of the valley (*). After a morning of wandering through the Sanctuary of Machupicchu, we'll return to Aguas Calientes and have lunch. We'll transfer from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo by train, and by bus proceed back to Cusco. We'll check into our hotel and spend the night there. (B/L)
