APU SALKANTAY TREK - MACHU PICHU
05 Days - 04 Nights
SUMMARY
In our opinion this route is one of the most wide-ranging and most beautiful in all of Perú, which leads to the southern glacial Apu Salkantay (20,570 ft) ending our trip in the Natural and Historic Sanctuary of Machupicchu.
This trip combines two days of trekking through the Andes to reach the snow-capped Salkantay (The Wild Mountain) and then another couple of days to spend in the tropical rainforest of the jungle.
We cross by ancient Inka roads located in the Cordillera Vilcabamba, passing through diverse ecological levels. Beginning at a mountain pass to 14,270 feet down to 4,000 feet of height, we continue downstream to the Santa Teresa River surrounded by lush vegetation and wildlife such as: Yaretas, orchids, beautiful waterfalls, lakes, lagoons and medicinal-thermo water at Cocalmayo. Then we will travel through the plantations of granadillas, papayas, bananas and coffee, and cultivation areas for the sacred leaf of the Inkas “La Coca”. Finally, we enjoy the hot mineral spring of Aguas Calientes ending our trip in the majestic Inka citadel of Machupicchu.
ITINERARY

Day 01: CUSCO - MOLLEPATA - SORAYPAMPA
We pick you up from the hotel and travel by private bus to Mollepata District (9,200 ft), which is a small community located down along the main road from Cusco to Abancay, then we keep driving up to Cruzpata (10,000 ft). Here we start our trip and meet our “arrieros” horsemen to help us to make easy our hike. We have a delicious lunch in a quite spot called Chuñuna, appreciating the landscape typical from Puna. Next in the afternoon we will hike for about three hours and after a funny and relaxing hiking we’ll be arriving to our first campsite which is Soraypampa (12,460 ft), tea time, dinner and overnight. (L/D/T)

Day 02: SORAYPAMPA - SALKANTAY PASS - CHAULLAY
After a good breakfast we leave Soraypampa, this is the harder day because we will climb up the Seven Snakes Pass (14,900 ft), the highest part in our trip to MACHUPICCHU, where we can see spectacular views of the second highest peak in the southern Perú named Salkantay; a stunning snow covered mountain (20,574 ft), then we’ll be able to appreciate the great views of Humantay and Huayanay mountains as well as lagoons, moraines and of course the flora and fauna typical from this region. Later we continue down and we’ll find some streams and many kind of birds. In the afternoon we finish our trekking arriving to Chaullay (9500 ft). Campsite, tea time and dinner. From this point starts the cloud forest region where the mosquitos exist, besides the semitropical weather and native people. (B/L/D/T)

Day 03: CHAULLAY - LA PLAYA - SANTA TERESA
After an early breakfast approximately at 6.00 am we begin our third day hiking until Wiñaypoqo where we have our lunch. Hiking downhill is pretty easy and here you will be introduced to a high jungle niche very well know as “Ceja de Selva”, where you will have the chance to find the ancient traditional leaves of Coca as well as coffee and several native fruits plantations. In the afternoon we’ll walk more than two hours, arriving to La Playa (8,030 ft), here we will enjoy the fabulous hot springs. Campsite, tea time and dinner. (B/L/D/T)

Day 05: AGUAS CALIENTES - MACHUPICHU - CUSCO
After an early breakfast, we'll take a bus up the winding road to Machupicchu (7,900 ft) to witness the extraordinary dawn from Intipunku (Sun Door). You will get Machupicchu before the crowded trains arrive, good for empty pictures and enough time for those looking to climb the holy mountain of Waynapicchu (8,700 ft) or a quiet hike to the temple of the Moon which is located behind Waynapicchu, just have to let us know your plans.
